Stepping Out Of Your Business And Into Life

In a world driven by constant connectivity and the pursuit of success, it’s easy to find business owners immersed in their work, often at the expense of their personal lives.

However, I feel there has definitely been a paradigm shift in recent years, emphasising the importance of a healthy work-life balance and the integration of business and leisure – a trend known as “bleisure.” This transformation is not only reshaping the way CEOs approach work, but also providing opportunities to recharge, explore, and enhance both personal and professional growth.

Understanding the Work-Life Blend

The traditional boundary between ‘this is work life’ and ‘this is personal life’ is evolving into a more fluid concept, where work and leisure activities can now overlap, something that was always traditionally been deemed a big no no!

“Work-life blend” recognises that modern professionals, business owners and entrepreneurs no longer function within strict time boundaries. Instead, they find ways to integrate their work responsibilities into their personal lives and vice versa.

There has also been a growing “bleisure,” trend, a term coined from the fusion of “business” and “leisure.” This trend involves combining work-related travel with leisure activities, in order to make the most of trips by exploring new destinations, cultures, and experiences. Bleisure travel isn’t just about extending a business trip; it’s about turning a necessity into an opportunity for personal growth and relaxation.

The Strong Appeal of the Work-Life Blend

If you chose to loosen the boundary lines on work and personal life and it’s the right choice for you, the work-life blend can have several positives:

Increased Productivity: Acknowledging that an “always-on” approach is counterproductive, embracing the blend can lead to improved productivity. Integrating leisure activities into routines provides necessary breaks that can boost overall effectiveness.

Holistic Well being: The work-life blend nurtures a holistic approach to well being. By prioritising personal lives alongside professional commitments we can experience reduced stress levels, better mental health, and increased gratitude.

Innovation and Creativity: Being open to different experiences and environments, cultures, and perspectives during bleisure travel can spark fresh ideas and creativity. Stepping out of the corporate or business bubble can bring new ways of thinking, which can be invaluable in business.

At Home and on Holiday

Whether at home or on holiday, here’s how you can optimise the work-life blend and bleisure trend:

Prioritise Self-Care: A successful work-life blend begins with self-care. Set aside time for exercise, hobbies, and spending quality time with family and friends. This practice boosts overall well being, which in turn can boost performance.

Embrace Technology Wisely: Leverage technology to maintain connectivity while remaining present in your personal life. Use tools that allow you to streamline work tasks and stay updated, without encroaching on leisure times you’ve set aside.

Plan Bleisure Trips Strategically: When traveling for business, plan your itinerary to include leisure activities. Research the destination’s attractions, local cuisine, and must see sights. This can turn mundane business travel into memorable experiences.

Delegate: It’s crucial to delegate tasks to your team to handle responsibilities in your absence (if you have one). Trusting your team’s capabilities allows you to step away with confidence.

Disconnect When Needed!: Give yourself permission to disconnect from work during leisure times. Inform clients about your availability, and resist the urge to check emails or messages. The blend only goes so far, it is still important to be truly present and disconnect when you need to.

Reflect and Realign: Regularly assess your work-life blend practices. Reflect on what’s working and what needs adjustment. Be open to adapting your approach based on what you need.

By embracing a work-life blend, we can not only increase productivity and well being but also nurture creativity, have better relationships, and a more holistic approach to success.

Whether at home or on holiday, the key lies in balancing responsibilities with meaningful leisure activities, ultimately leading to more balance. So, step out of your business and into life – the possibilities of this blend are so rewarding!
